In this paper the main performances of IEEE 802.15.4 based Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have been analyzed in order to evaluate their suitability in supporting a typical set of Smart Grids functions. The network performances have been assessed by simulating the WSN behavior in supporting data exchange services based on the standard IEC 61850. The main parameters characterizing the data link performance have been assessed and analyzed through simulations carried out in the QualNet environment. They include in particular the throughput, the degradation of services and the data latency. The results obtained show as the application of WSN based communication services exhibits intrinsic advantages as rapid-connect packet data, reliable network services and reduced overall infrastructure support requirements, that can turn out particularly useful in several Smart Grids applications as far as automation, remote monitoring and supervision are concerned.

Abstract
In this paper the main performances of IEEE 802.15.4 based Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have been analyzed in order to evaluate their suitability in supporting a typical set of Smart Grids functions. The network performances have been assessed by simulating the WSN behavior in supporting data exchange services based on the standard IEC 61850. The main parameters characterizing the data link performance have been assessed and analyzed through simulations carried out in the QualNet environment. They include in particular the throughput, the degradation of services and the data latency. The results obtained show as the application of WSN based communication services exhibits intrinsic advantages as rapid-connect packet data, reliable network services and reduced overall infrastructure support requirements, that can turn out particularly useful in several Smart Grids applications as far as automation, remote monitoring and supervision are concerned.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
