Abstract The impact of rainstorm on soil erosion in Benevento province: interpolation of a degradation index by geostatistical techniques. The geomorphological processes produced by surface waters runoff connected to violent rainstorms cause serious soil degradation on agricultural landscapes of Benevento Province. This work presumes that the occurrence of rainstorms is a key-indicator for the study of land degradation, on scale long-term observation in a 2.071 km' areas of Benevento province since 1981 to 1999. The excessive space changeable data has allowed to make a right mapping of Agricultural Surface Degradation Index (ASDI/IDSA) aimed to individuate areas characterized from a different recurrence of the degradation phenomenon. The techniques applied to elaborate the dataset are the classic ones of the geostatistic survey and the precise ordinary Kriging as technique of linear interpolation. The results outlined by the map of Kriging indicate a strong spatial variability of the degradation indicator, and a considerable portion of land (30%) corresponding to hazard classes high to very high.
