Abstract In the present paper, have been analyzed and processed data from the MODIS sensor, available on the NASA satellites Terra/Aqua in order to correlate the Land Surface Temperature data remotely sensed and processed appropriately to the effects on the ground that this physical parameter produces in terms of desertification or more generally of Land degradation. The research was conducted on a large data set, consisting of 3185 images in the time 20032011, from which they were extracted and processed informations about infrared emitted. The latter were converted into maps of Land Surface Temperature, based on the annual average. In order to compare the maps obtained, we have created an index ranging from O to 1: therefore, the original LST maps were converted into maps of LST index. The visual comparison evidences that in the years 2003 and 2004 the LST index has not changed substantially, however, the year 2005 recorded the lowest values of the index LST highlighting a negative anomaly. In the years 20062011 there has been a progressive increase of the hottest classes of the index to achieve the greatest extension in 2011. This constituted a clear positive anomaly. The positive anomalies represent climatic conditions of environmental stress involving progressive conditions of water deficit and possible suffering of the vegetation. All dataset examined were stored in a geodatabase, and thus managed in a Geographic Information System.
