KEY POINTS • On 15th October 2015, the town of Benevento was hit by a destructive flood of the Calore River that caused more than 1 billion euros of damages. • The Morphological Quality of the Calore R. was assessed three years before the flood and recently checked. In this study, it has been compared with the spatial distribution of the inundated areas. • Good relationships were found between the location of the inundated areas and the spatial distribution of the reaches with poor morphological quality and, in particular, with significant elements of artificiality.
