Abstract

As a consequence of the growth of the Internet, new software infrastructures for distributed computing are become an effective support to solve large-scale problems by exploiting the available networked computing power. This paper presents such an infrastructure, a first definition of a Java middleware for metacomputing, called HiMM, whose main goal is to support parallel and distributed programming based on objects in heterogeneous environments. HIMM enables dynamic applications to run on collections of nodes virtually arranged according to a hierarchical network topology, mapped on wide-area physical networks of computers or clusters of computers.
