Agent-based social simulation is an expanding research field lying at the intersection between social and computer sciences that aims at exploring processes underlying complex social phenomena by means of artificial so- cieties. After a brief description of social simulation paradigm and its im- pact on social sciences, the paper presents a simple evolutionary agent-based model of the interplay between damaging behaviors, punishment and social mechanisms of learning and imitation. The goal is twofold: to show how agent-based simulation can be used to illuminate basic mechanisms underly- ing social phenomena that are relevant for legal science and to reflect, in an innovative way, on how society, policy and rule makers can deal with such phenomena.

Abstract
Agent-based social simulation is an expanding research field lying at the intersection between social and computer sciences that aims at exploring processes underlying complex social phenomena by means of artificial so- cieties. After a brief description of social simulation paradigm and its im- pact on social sciences, the paper presents a simple evolutionary agent-based model of the interplay between damaging behaviors, punishment and social mechanisms of learning and imitation. The goal is twofold: to show how agent-based simulation can be used to illuminate basic mechanisms underly- ing social phenomena that are relevant for legal science and to reflect, in an innovative way, on how society, policy and rule makers can deal with such phenomena.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
