Abstract

Nationalist and Sovereign Populisms in Hungary and Poland : the Exploitation of Religion · In recent years, nationalism, associated with sovereignty, seems to have become one of the features of western democracies. In Europe, populism, karst-like as yet, is pushing some Eastern-European governments like those of Hungary and Poland, towards « illiberal totalitarian democracy » which also exploits religion within a perspective of closure and exclusion of all minorities, be they ethnic and/or religious. This trend is being studied by international scholars and political scientists. The message of Pope Francis’ Church is clear. The Church needs to pursue the pathway indicated by Vatican Council II, one of dialogue and integration aimed at combatting discrimination.
