ABSTRACT The study area corresponds on the western portion of Sarno River Plain. This, on its turn, is the southern half of the wide Piana Campana Graben: a neotectonic morphostructural feature of the Apennine chain which has experienced high subsidence rates (1.5 mm/y on an average) during Pleistocene tirnes. On the base of a detailed geomorphological survey, and by using literary, archaeological as well as stratigraphic data, a reconstruction of the shoreline of the 1st century has been attempted. The beach of that time was several hundred meters less advanced than the present one, and located on the outer side of a beach - ridge limiting a narrow lagoon (see fig. 6). Landward the lagoon was limited by an ancient, inactive, dune - ridge that still appears as a linear mound on the flat topography of the Plain (Bottaro - Pioppaino mound). Many archaeological findings testify that the seaport of the ancient town of Pompei.
