In this chapter we deal with different approaches to obtain fast and low power consumption amplitude modulation with silicon optoelectronic devices. After a description of the various physical effects that allow the interaction of material modification with travelling light we describe the optical configurations and different driving schemes that, so far, have been presented to the scientific community.
