The main aim for the compilation of an environment geochemical mapping is to represent spatially the metallic element regional trends and to fornish an useful tool for land planning use. The Volturno river basin is an area highly inhabited, with a large agricultural and industrial development. In the Volturno river basin territory (5455 Km2) have been collected 1859 stream sediment samples with a nominal density of 1 sample per 3 Km2. In 998 sites has been carried out a radiometric survey for the 238U, 40K, 232Th and total (U,Th,K) radioactivity determinations, using a portable instrument (GRS-500 of Scintrex Ltd., Canada). For the compilation of the multielements geochemical maps, the analytical data have been elaborated using univariate and multivariate statistics and a GIS (Arc/View). Fourty thematic geochemical maps reporting the distribution of single element and factor scores from Rmode factor analysis associations, have been compiled. For toxic elements ( As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) have been also produced geochemical intervention maps for residential/recreational and industrial/commercial land use, using as intervetion criteria the threshold adopted for stream sediments by Canada and Netherlands, because in Italy have not been established yet by law such intervention limits for stream sediments.
