The tourism of the new millennium is in a phase of deep evolution: the anthropological-cultural changes of the modern society and the processes of globalization have determined a modification in the consumption patterns of the individuals and have generated a new way of thinking about the holiday, not only leisure and relaxation, but experience of life and personal enrichment under the social, cultural and environmental profile. Hence an evolution of the demand towards new forms of tourism and a tourist with a decision-making process more selective, looking for the elsewhere, the other self, a direct relationship with the places visited, the territory and its historical memory, its culture and its atmos-phere. It is the whole scenario of the “new tourism” that is placed on this work: it proposes a cognitive study on the phenomenon of rural tourism through an analysis of places and forms of supply and demand, but also its contextualiza-tion to the territory of the Irpinia, through an activity of “observation” of ex-periences of construction and management of smaller tourist destinations in ru-ral areas in a position to making system with the territory in which they are de-ployed and to offer opportunity of increase and development to marginal and geographically inner areas. Il turismo del nuovo millennio è in una fase di profonda evoluzione: i cambiamenti antropologico-culturali della società moderna e i processi di globalizzazione in atto hanno determinato una modifica nelle abitudini di consumo degli individui e hanno generato un nuovo modo di concepire la vacanza, non solo svago e relax, ma esperienza di vita e di arricchimento personale sotto il profilo sociale, culturale e ambientale. Di qui una evoluzione della domanda verso nuove forme di turismo e un turista con un processo decisionale sempre più selettivo, alla ricerca dell’altrove, del diverso da sé, di un rapporto diretto con i luoghi visitati, con il territorio e la sua memoria storica, la sua cultura e il suo ambiente. È nel complesso scenario dei “nuovi turismi” che si colloca il presente lavoro: esso propone uno studio conoscitivo sul fenomeno del turismo rurale attraverso un’analisi dei luoghi e delle forme, della domanda e dell’offerta, ma soprattutto una sua contestualizzazione al territorio dell’Irpinia, attraverso una attività di “osservazione” di esperienze di costruzione e gestione di destinazioni turistiche minori in ambito rurale in grado di fare sistema con il territorio in cui sono calate e di offrire opportunità di crescita e di sviluppo ad aree geograficamente marginali ed interne. A partire dalle risorse, dall’identità e dalle vocazioni territoriali, si guarda all’Irpinia plurale attraverso l’albergo diffuso di Castelvetere sul Calore, la forza attrattiva del Taurasi DOCG, il termalismo in ambito rurale della Valle d’Ansanto.
