Recently, the improvement in computational power has allowed researchers to model and simulate dynamical systems of growing complexity. In particular, here we report on the construction of a reference model to be used as a workbench to design and test control strategies aimed at minimizing the global emission of three-way catalytic converters (TWC) in non-steady-state conditions. This problem is of great interest to industrial application since vehicle emission standards are becoming stricter and stricter and a detailed mathematical description of TWC is thus necessary for the optimization of its performance. In this perspective, we also present a reduced order model for the purpose of real-time implementation.
