The aim of this work is to demonstrate the efficiency of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors to be used as technological platform for railway monitoring and train tracking in transportation applications. In the specific case, FBG sensors have been bonded to rails in order to perform on line monitoring of switch arms during transitions and of rails when loaded by running trains (train tracking and structural monitoring). Field trials have been carried out along the Merano - Malles line at Tel station (Bolzano - Italy). Experimental results are here reported demonstrating the excellent capability of FBG technology to be readily employed in transportation environments.
