Objectives: Knowledge exploitation is a key topic in management studies. Not all of the generated knowledge is useful to the firm; knowledge that is not exploited can give rise to knowledge spillovers (KS). The phenomenon of knowledge spillovers has been extensively explored with reference to technology clusters, and more recently in relation to the impact on entrepreneurial activity. To date, the topic has received little attention with regard to the cultural industry. We believe that cultural firms are characterized by high investments in knowledge, embedded in a symbolic base. Therefore, they may give rise to KS with a potential significant impact on the vitality of the geographical area. The objective of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of KS and their possible exploitation within a specific cultural event. Methodology: Since this is an exploratory research, we adopt a qualitative approach based on the analysis of a longitudinal case study, considered relevant to the phenomenon examined. Findings: The main results of the study suggest that cultural events presents pre-conditions for KS, however their realization and their consequential positive impact on the geographical area are complex. Research limits: The study refers to the analysis of a single case; future research should be extended to cases where KS constituted a significant stimulus to entrepreneurship. Practical implications: The research reveals interesting managerial implications in terms of social networks, as well as suggestions to policy makers to facilitate the phenomenon. Originality of the study: The paper aims to provide an original contribution to research on the external exploitation of knowledge, focusing on KS and their impact on the territory in the case of cultural events, an important but relatively unexplored topic.

Abstract
Objectives: Knowledge exploitation is a key topic in management studies. Not all of the generated knowledge is useful to the firm; knowledge that is not exploited can give rise to knowledge spillovers (KS).
