We show that hyperbolic metamaterials implemented as multilayers based on the Thue-Morse aperiodic sequence may exhibit strong nonlocal effects manifested as the appearance of additional extraordinary waves not predicted by standard models based of the effective medium theory. We show that the role of aperiodic order may be critical in the onset of these phenomena, which may disappear for a periodic arrangement of the same constituent material layers.

Abstract
We show that hyperbolic metamaterials implemented as multilayers based on the Thue-Morse aperiodic sequence may exhibit strong nonlocal effects manifested as the appearance of additional extraordinary waves not predicted by standard models based of the effective medium theory. We show that the role of aperiodic order may be critical in the onset of these phenomena, which may disappear for a periodic arrangement of the same constituent material layers.File in questo prodotto:
