Abstract

We introduce a complex-coordinate extension of the transformation-optic approach that can be used to synthesize general classes of metamaterials with balanced loss and gain inspired by the recently emerged parity-time (PT) symmetry paradigm. After illustration of the basic underlying theory, we briefly review the main implications and some possible applications.
