Abstract

A novel two-dimensional deterministic wave trapping and scattering test environment amenable to full-wave analytic solution is introduced and used for numerical simulation in a dynamic experiment. The results are compared with those from (zero wavelength) ray-tracing, which reveal chaotic properties that are not found in the full-wave solution. However, the full-wave solution, under appropriate conditions, shows trends toward irregularity and other peculiar characteristics, not observed in geometries featuring "regular" ray behavior, which can be interpreted as "ray-chaotic footprints.".
