The study describes a methodology aimed at identifying the optimal location for an urban solid waste treatment plant. The methodology is based on the definition of variables geared towards social and territorial safeguarding and outlines a procedure aimed to get collective participation, which can prevent social conflicts and the onset of the NIMBY syndrome (Bobbio 2011). The NIMBY syndrome (Not In My BackYard) is perhaps the best-known phenomenon of social contrast expressing a “localized” refusal, related to a use of land that is disapproved by the local community.
